Support for Public Policy

By providing up-to-date, accurate and transparent expertise, INERIS helps to accelerate the implementation of public policies on risk prevention.
The Institute also supports the State in the management of environmental crises, particularly in the event of accidents or in the aftermath of accidents. As the State’s technical expert on risks, Ineris produces and makes available reference tools and methods.
It ensures the satisfaction of public authorities whilst paying particular attention to the expectations and needs of all stakeholders.

The Institute’s work involves, in particular, the evaluation or development of standard tools and methods designed to better understand, predict and manage the risks arising from human activities that may affect the safety of people, property and ecosystems. The Institute also offers its expertise to support the preparation and implementation of technical regulations.

Ineris’s support programmes are grouped into ‘structural themes’ that correspond to the main themes of the Institute’s objectives and performance contract:
-   managing risks associated with the energy transition, the supply of critical raw materials and the circular economy;
-   understanding and managing risks at the level of an industrial site and a region;
-   characterising the hazards of substances and their impacts on human health and biodiversity.

Particular attention is paid to the promotion and dissemination of the deliverables produced under these programmes and intended for the various stakeholders involved in risk prevention.

Depending on the nature of the issues addressed, these programmes are designed, in particular, to:

  • produce technical guides or risk assessment methods;
  • promote best practices in environmental protection;
  • develop and operate databases, information portals or online support services in the field of environmental risk;
  • to advance our understanding of potential hazards through experimental work or numerical modelling;
  • to carry out benchmarking exercises with other countries, particularly in Europe, to identify relevant technical and regulatory initiatives in the field of risk management.
